In ancient times, many great African leaders built nations that had their own cities, governments, businesses, militaries and cultures. Some examples are: the Kingdom of Kush (modern day Sudan), the Axum empire (modern day Ethiopia), and Ancient Kemet (modern day Egypt). Dinga Cisse founded the Ghana empire. Sundiata Keita founded the Mali empire. Sunni Ali created the Songhai empire. King Taharqa significantly expanded, unified, and revitalized the Kushite-Kemetic empire.
More recently great African nation builders worked to overcome European colonization and to take control of their own nations. Some examples are Queen Nzinga of Angola, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Ahmed Sekou Toure of Guinea, Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Patrice Lumumba of Congo.
Great Africans did the same to overcome Caribbean colonization. For instance, Queen Nanny who led the Maroon Revolution in Jamaica and established a free civilization for her people. Also, Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines led the Hatian Revolution which overthrew colonical rule and established Haiti as a completely independent, Black nation.
In America, Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his Ministers like Malcolm X, expanded the Nation of Islam from a small organization to world-wide Nation without borders. Later, after it was dismantled, Minister Louis Farrakhan re-built today's Nation of Islam even bigger. Yahweh Ben Yahweh built the Nation of Yahweh, achieving economic success rarely seen in our race.
Each of these great nation builders, and many others, successfully built Nations for our race. Instead of working solely for their personal gain, they built Nations for the betterment of our race. This makes them heroes amongst our people.
Marcus Garvey (1887 ‑ 1940) was a nation builder who had a vision of a free and independent Africa, controlled by African people, free of European colonizers. He worked his entire life to unite African people and get us to create an independent nation of our own.
Marcus Garvey created the Universal Negro Improvement Association, an organization whose purpose was "to unite all people of African ancestry of the world into one great body to establish a country and absolute government of their own". He got over 10 million Black people to join his organization to help in the effort. The "Garvey Movement", as it came to be known, became the most successful mass movement of Black people in modern history.
As Garvey said, "The Negro peoples of the world should concentrate upon the object of building up for themselves a great nation in Africa... creating for ourselves a political superstate... a government, a nation of our own, strong enough to lend protection to the members of our race scattered all over the world, and to compel the respect of the nations and races of the earth."
Marcus Garvey's work inspired many future Black leaders to free their nations of colonial rule and build strong independent nations.
Marcus Garvey's U.N.I.A. created the "Cross of African Redemption" medal which represented the purpose of freeing Africa and creating an independent nation for the Black race (Nation Building). It was the only official medal issued by the Garvey Movement. The medal featured a A four-armed cross with a central star, with the words "African/Redemption" and the initials "UNIA". It featured a red, black, and green ribbon that could be pinned to one's lapel. Medals were issued to bronze, silver and gold.
This medal was awarded to only a few distinguished leaders of the Garvey Movement, as well to those who made significant financial contributions to Garvey's nation building effort. It was a tremendous honor to receive one of these rare medals.
As Marcus Garvey said, "Teach Negroes to look for honor in their own race and from their own nation and to serve their own race and nation to get such honors."
We are continuing in the fine tradition of our ancestors by building 'Garvey Nation', an independent ONLINE nation for Black people worldwide.
A crucial part of building a Nation is uniting and educating its members on the purposes of the Nation, and developing a common culture. Marcus Garvey achieved this through having his members participate in carefully organized weekly meetings in more than 1,100 chapters around the world. We are achieving this by having our Citizens worldwide participate in daily online activities and a weekly national meeting (video conference call).
Also, Garvey Nation is powered economically by our Buy Black Movement program. The purchases that our Supporters (monthly purchasers) make from Black-owned businesses, fund Garvey Nation, its programs, as well as its growth and expansion. So, to grow Garvey Nation, we must continously grow the number of Supporters.
Therefore, in Garvey Nation, a Nation Builder is a Citizen who (1) participates actively, (2) brings in new Supporters, and (3) buys Black.
Each week, Nation Builder status is awarded to Citizens who complete several tasks that help build Garvey Nation. The tasks for the week are clearly displayed to Supporters who play the Nation Building Game.
In Garvey Nation, our week ends and the new week begins on Wednesday evening at 6pm Pacific / 9pm Eastern. That is the time of our Weekly Garvey Nation Conference Call where Citizens all over the world tune in to get the latest Garvey Nation updates and hear Nation Builders for the week get awarded.
Once you earn Nation Builder for a week, the virtual 'Garvey Nation - Nation Builder Medal' appears in your profile. Then, each additional time you earn Nation Builder for a week, your title will increase. For instance, if you earned Nation Builder 5 times, your title would be listed as "5X Nation Builder". As your Nation Builder title increases, so does your prestige in Garvey Nation.
You can become a Nation Builder this week! Log into Garvey Nation, become a Supporter (if not one already), and do all the daily activities for the week. History awaits you!
"Teach every Black man to work for the good of his nation."
